Contemporary Artists for Kids: Stephanie Kilgast

Stephanie Kilgast is a contemporary sculptor and painter who depicts the natural world and humankind's effect on our environment. Since 2017, her Discarded Objects series, uses discarded objects, to which she applies sculpted animals, plant life and insects that seem to consume and overtake the trash. "Her work has a cheerful post-apocalyptic feel to it, a reassuring reminder that nature has the capacity to grow back, if we only let it." 1

Kilgast's hope is that viewers of her work will, "leave...with a feeling of happiness and hope, and keep fighting." 2

Her career as a sculptor began when she began sculpting realistic miniature food from polymer clay. Watch this charming interview of Kilgast on the Food Network to see plentiful examples of her miniature food sculptures and watch her work. In addition, she authored the book,  Miniature Food Tutorial Book – Party Food in Miniature,  with 21 miniature polymer clay projects.

When asked when she began making sculpture she said, "As a kid, I used to make miniature food for my dolls. I completely forgot about it when growing up and even though I was always drawn to artistic endeavors, I only lately found my way back to sculpture in 2007 when I started sculpting…miniature food again." 1

You can find painting, drawing and clay tutorials with Kilgast on Skillshare. Kilgast was born in 1985, Frankfurt Germany, and currently resides in Vannes, France.

Pop up Art School’s mission is to introduce children to living, breathing artists. We believe it's important for kids to see that art is being made in the here and now. Kilgast’s art depicts the current state of our natural environment. Her message is hopeful and she seeks to inspire others.

Kilgast is one of the artists that we are featuring in our virtual Art Club for kids. Every four weeks we spotlight a new contemporary artist and families receive three pre-recorded lessons and one lesson taught live via Zoom.
